Rainfall

A domain connecting crops, rainfall, water, livestock, and food security in one updateable picture.

Rain is an annual rhythm, not one number

NASA POWER provides monthly estimates for every governorate from 1981 to 2025. The story starts with seasonality: when does rain arrive, and where is it concentrated?

Two climate regimes in one country

Average annual precipitation across the series was 623 mm in Latakia and 146 mm in Deir ez-Zor. This compares representative governorate climate estimates; it does not measure available water volume.

2008 matters, but it is not the end of the series

The governorate mean was 228 mm in 2008. In the currently available data, 2025 is at 190 mm, while 1989 recorded 142 mm. A single annual rank alone does not establish agricultural drought; timing, soils, and irrigation also matter.

Note: this is an unweighted arithmetic mean across 14 governorate points, not an area-weighted national average.
