Food and climate observatory
Food Security
A domain connecting crops, rainfall, water, livestock, and food security in one updateable picture.
Availability is not access
Food balance sheets describe national quantities available for food or feed. They do not measure household purchasing power, local differences, or lived hunger directly.
FAOSTAT estimates undernourishment using three-year averages: the indicator rose from 6.3% in 2010 to 39.0% in 2022. It is a slow-moving modelled estimate, not a real-time headcount.
Four national lenses
Undernourishment, dietary energy, wheat used for food versus feed, and producer prices. Filters cover time, item, and measure; no geography is offered where none exists.

Dietary energy supply may fall while prices rise, but neither alone establishes who eats less or where. Responsible interpretation combines these series with household expenditure, consumption, and nutrition surveys that are not currently in the observatory.
